1. Why Microservices Need a Service Mesh

As microservice architectures scale to hundreds of interacting services, cross-cutting network concerns (retries, circuit breaking, transport encryption, telemetry) clutter business application logic.

A service mesh delegates these networking responsibilities to transparent sidecar proxies (Envoy) injected alongside application pods, managed by a centralized control plane (Istiod).

2. Zero-Trust Mutual TLS (mTLS) Enforcement

With Istio PeerAuthentication policies, all pod-to-pod communication is encrypted with mutual TLS using short-lived X.509 certificates managed and automatically rotated by Istio Citadel.
